The Fairy Princess was excited about the new show – CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND  on The CW for several reasons –

It’s a Musical – whaddaya talk, whaddaya talk…conceived of by Rachel Bloom, who TFP has been a bit in awe of for a while because of THIS video…

The show has an API Male, JOSH CHAN – ( Vincent Rodriguez III) as a romantic goal (NOT since SELFIE!)

Crazy-Ex-GF_Josh-Chan_cropped-2

Has one of TFP‘s very dear friends as one of the principals – get to know Ms. Donna Lynne Champlin, one of the most talented people on the planet…

tn-500_maine14

So it was not a huge surprise that she loved the trailer – take a look!

It’s like if Ariel got legs, jumped animated films, fell for General Shang in summer camp, but will probably wind up falling in love with Prince Hans of the Southern Isles (no, truly, cuz the character GREG is played by…wait for it…Santino Fontana, who voiced Hans), even though she will truly NOT realize she is in love with Hans until many, many seasons later, even though she has the venerable advice and encouragement of a Charlotte La Bouff to encourage her to believe in love and….anyway...

can+never+have+too+much+of+a+good+thing

The show has it’s premiere MONDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2015 on The CW (website)

TFP thinks the show is going to be SUPER FUN and she is all for more theater people going and working in television.

119rent19

However, being THEATER people…and for the Brits it is, of course, THEATRE people, the actors involved have a triple threat background – sing, dance, act, AND give to charity.

(Ok, yes, that is FOUR, but TFP did not get the math gene)

Because…theater. It’s what we do. We do charity, a LOT!

tumblr_m5j3a7LLhb1r16z4vo1_500

In fact, it is SOOOOO much a part of what we do, there is an organization devoted to it called BC/EFA – Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS –  and they raise money all year and fund programs all around the country through grants for research, medical equipment, free clinics for health care…well, take a look:

2014_Grant_poster

To that end, the brilliant cast of CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND on The CW has issued a #TAPCHALLENGE – and here is what – FOR EVERY #TAPPED video made by people on another television show who accept –The CW is going to donate some money.

But why should people on TV have ALL the fun?

YES, PEOPLE AT HOME – YOU CAN DO IT TOO! (Variety Article Here)

  1. YOU, the Tapper must donate to BC/EFA something, be it Baubles, Bangles, and Beads, or $10, $20, $200…
  2. The TAPPEE, the one that has been challenged, IN ORDER TO ACCEPT IT, must ALSO donate something to BC/EFA

LINK TO DONATE TO BC/EFA IS RIGHT HERE!

Currently the CW Cast of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has #Tapped people in Modern Family, Madam Secretary, The Flash, Jane The Virgin, Supergirl, and the ENTIRE Cast of Blood and Oil!

However, with regards to that…seems they only picked people who they knew could tap…Bebe Neuwirth?

Staples+Easy+Button

THERE ARE A LOT MORE MUSICAL THEATER PEOPLE ON TELEVISION THAN YOU THINK!!!!!

dr-ken-2

And…others

(Dr. Ken will have his show on ABC on Friday nights this fall)….but back to the MT folk and who else could be challenged…

Harry Groener, most may know him from the films Road to Perdition, or About Schmidt… or more specifically as Mayor Wilkins from the Buffy The Vampire Slayer series….but also he can…

Maybe you may have missed Erich Bergen from Madame Secretary and his Bob Gaudio? He comes in at 1:31

Or Patina Miller – ALSO on Madame Secretary...well….

That Madame Secretary Cast is overrun with talent….second season!

Heck…even their Guest Stars like BD Wong are musical!

What about Aaron Tveit from Graceland? He might have a shuffle ball change in there…pick it up at 4:01

TFP is just sayin…there are a lot of people and TV Casts who could help the Cast of CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND raise some big money for BC/EFA

tumblr_inline_mf7xxos7T41ry4qim

So let’s get to steppin‘ there Hollywoodland Peeps!

No one cares how good it is, the important thing is to have fun and raise some money for charity!

anigif_original-grid-image-2729-1423163223-14

Also, Hollywood TV Show stars, it is ok – no one expects you to go to Nationals…so, no pressure at all!

Just kick ball change your way to a fundraising place and tap all our troubles away!

TFP out.

The Fairy Princess has been seeing quite a bit in the press lately about a lady who tried to shed her own skin – literally – in search of another. While TFP is fascinated by this, there are plenty of people writing about it, so she does not feel the need, and also – she is not African American – but she has enjoyed reading the many points of view, and she is reminded every time that she reads one of the articles of something she firmly believes:

photo

She wishes Rachel Dolezal much luck in her new career – whatever that may be – as she has now stepped down from her leadership at the Spokane, WA NAACP, and at the same time, cannot help thinking…

Thanks for not choosing to try and go Asian, Ms. Dolezal, because we have been #EmmaStoned enough lately.

emma-stone-noddingAnd we’ve been Swinton-ed, and Johannson-ed. There is a whole lotta co-opting going on in Hollywoodland at the moment.

TFP cares about Diversity – she is on and on about it all the time, and for the most part, she speaks, in her blog, about those who are underrepresented in roles, even when those roles are written for people with their particular heritage in mind.

She does that a lot. Which is sad.

D7Snr

TFP decided THIS blog, she wanted to talk about another kind of Diversity – she wants to talk today about…wait for it – BIODIVERSITY.

What-Say-what-DAFUQ-WTF-What-the-fuck-GIF

Ecological Biodiversity is the diversity of ecosystems, natural communities and habitats.  In essence, it’s the variety of ways that species interact with each other and their environment.   The forests of Maine differ from the forests of Colorado by the types of species found in both ecosystems, as well as the temperature and rainfall.  These two seemingly similar ecosystems have a lot of differences that make them both special.” – Natural Wildlife Federation

TFP is fascinated by nature and all it’s many forms. She has a multi-ethnic background that includes various countries, and she has visited them all – except Wales – she has seen the differences throughout the years in the landscape that man has wrought. Oftentimes not for the better.

Which is why, when her friend, David Lee McInnis

told her he was producing a documentary about wild wolves in the lower 48 States of America, she said she would do anything she could to help.

Because having seen this video about trophic cascade:

she could see that wolves are a vital part of our ecosystem.

Cute-Baby-Wolves

She has also never been asked to help fund anything that was not, at it’s most basic, a vanity project.

anigif_enhanced-buzz-25652-1405627896-5

This documentary  and it’s ambitions did not strike TFP as a vanity project. This is a time sensitive project that is of utmost importance to help draw attention to the importance of conservation and acceptance of wild creatures. The Wild Wolves are under attack, they need help – and they need it now.

TFP called upon some of her friends, you may know their work – because they are awesomely talented – Anthony Rapp (If/THEN, RENT),  J. Bernard Calloway (Memphis, All The Way), Erin Quill (OBC Avenue Q), Donna Lynne Champlin (Sweeney Todd, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), Aaron Ramey (Bridges of Madison County, The Visit) and Raymond J. Lee (Honeymoon In Vegas, Anything Goes) asked if they would come and help support – and they ALL did.

giphy

TFP started referring to this project as #BroadwayHowls.

Alexandre Manning (Zoolander) and Josh Burrow (Captain Morgan, The Crimson Mask) joined us, and what we came up with is the video you will see below.

OW.THUMBNAIL.LHT

OPERATION WOLF DOCUMENTARY hopes to have the same impact on how the public views Wild Wolves as BLACKFISH did on how the public views Orcas in captivity.

seaworld

The Wild Wolves are fighting a battle they know nothing about, but which will decimate their numbers until they are unable to be anything more than an oddity in the wild. The only ones that can help are humans. This documentary seems to be a step in the right direction.

Wolves foursome

The filmmakers have already been in the field, interviewing experts, and have the support of the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center in this endeavor.

TFP is asking you all, as a personal favor –  if her blog has ever spoken to you, or to an issue that you are invested in – to take a look at this video that David has put together for his project

OPERATION WOLF DOCUMENTARY

WHETHER YOU DECIDE TO GIVE MONEY OR NOTTFP just asks that you take a look.

Thanks for reading till the end – thank you to all of the Actors who gave so generously of their time and talent to help spread awareness of this issue.

If you have watched this, and it made you feel….the feelings…please take a moment to post it on your Facebook Wall or Tweet it with the hashtag #OperationWolfDoc just to let us know you have seen it.

DIVERSITY – it’s not just for showbiz – come and howl with us.

The Fairy Princess had a Broadway day the other day- dinner and a show. Magical, yes?

Actually, yes it was – she went to see IF/THEN and if one was looking for any indication of PTTS (Post Traumatic TONY Syndrome), you could not find it at this viewing. The audience gave standing ovations to the entire company, and no, jaded theater critics, the house was not full of 14 year old fans of FROZEN, it was an adult audience.

Because it’s written for adults. Adults who used to worry about rent, but who now worry about a lot more…like being alone.

Maybe the kids went to the matinee? Who cares? Let’s let it go.

When you see jaded New Yorkers overcome by a show, and hear them ‘ugly cry’ during some dramatic scenes in Act 2, and then seen what looked to be over 100 people waiting at the stage door for the leads, it makes it hard to walk away not feeling confused, given what happened this past awards show.

Though Hugh Jackman was ‘hopping’ as a host, and The Fairy Princess liked all the musical numbers coming where they did,

there seemed to be underlying tension throughout. If one did not follow the show on Twitter, one may not have known that there were some very cool things going on – people winning awards for the first time,

or for the second, or third because you were not seeing it on the small screen. There were oddly made decisions as to who warranted small screen time that made the show at times seem, well… petty.

Not to mention odd choices for ‘entertainment’

Meredith Wilson garnering accolades for being a rap composer, when they refused to televise the composer who won for a musical that was actually on Broadway this season was a time suck that The Fairy Princess could have done without.

Yes, BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY closed, we all knew that – but why wouldn’t BEST ORIGINAL SCORE or BEST ORCHESTRATION be televised?  Aren’t BEST ORIGINAL SCORE and BEST ORCHESTRATION the cornerstones of Musical Theater?

Who can do a musical without scores or orchestrations?

No one.

Plus, Jason Robert Brown gave good speech:

While JRB was ‘shouting out’ to women and acknowledging the relatively small number of women on Broadway in all the different aspects, The Fairy Princess would like to ‘shout out’ to him, that she appreciates that in what must have been a very bittersweet moment – accepting individual awards when your show has already closed – he took time to speak on the issue of representation and diversity.

That was classy.

However, having viewed JRB’s speech, and now seen IF/THEN, The Fairy Princess is truly wondering why some potential nominees were all but shut out of the process?

Mathematically, yes, it is explainable – there are 50 members on the Nominating Committee.

They have to see everything and then, of course, they vote. Their votes are tallied and  then get turned over to the general TONY voting population of just under 900 people. Those under 900 vote by another secret ballot, which is how we get our winners.

They have, the Nominating Committee, certain instructions in the category of Best Show:

1. Where there are are 9 or more potential nominees, the NC must vote for 4 shows, and the 4 shows with the most votes are automatically in the BEST SHOW category.

2. If there are 5 or FEWER shows in the category, the NC must vote for 3 shows, and nominations are awarded accordingly.

Now HOW and WHO decides if there should be a FIFTH nomination? Or a FOURTH nomination in a year with less choices?

An Accounting firm.

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!

OH. Ohhhhhhhh.

The Accounting Firm that counts the secret ballots is the one who gets to decide – and there must be a difference of only 3 votes from the lowest ranking of the nominees.

It is not an Artistic Decision, which seems odd given that these awards are given to and given by Artistic People.

The Fairy Princess is not disagreeing with any of the Nominations, but what she is disagreeing with is that there is no ability for the Nominating Committee – not to take away, but to add, or for them to debate the use of that 5th spot.

Perhaps it is adding an additional level that the TONYS does not want to be bothered with, but in a season packed to the gills with talented people in excellent musicals – and with the amount of money a show brings to the New York economy, why could not there be an addendum vote?

Isn’t there room for an Executive Decision – not as to what show to put IN that last spot, but an Executive Decision to say yes, that last one should be used let’s keep our top four, and let’s vote again for the last one?

There was an additional spot open in the BEST MUSICAL category, and if only for the good of the New York Economy (and yes, there are plenty of other reasons), it should be filled if at all possible.

A BEST MUSICAL nomination can keep the doors open and keep people employed – and not just “people who need people‘  – there are dozens of people who make every Broadway show work every night from the ticket takers to the Teamsters, who,  when they are working, are adding to the general prosperity of the theater district as well as pulling in a paycheck themselves. Broadway and it’s denizens contributed $11.9 BILLION to the New York economy and 87,000 jobs.

87,000 jobs!

A TONY Nomination all but screams “IF YOU LOVE THEATER BUY A TICKET”.

Every day someone walks up to a ticket window who has never been to a Broadway show, and they buy their first ticket, and what usually makes them ‘jump’ to do so is the number of TONY Nominations or Wins a show has. Likewise when the show goes on an AEA Tour, the amount of Nominations or Awards helps with the pre-sale. Which one could argue, might have an impact in keeping shows on AEA Contracts? Worth a thought.

We of the theater should be invested in that theatergoer, because it is a cyclical thing – they have to love us to keep coming back. Giving them, as Sondheim once wrote “More to see….“, is a better business plan. Strict adherence to numbers – in short, strict counting of 50 votes, is limiting their ability to ‘fall in love’ with a new show.

The Tony Nominating Committee did their jobs, they voted – the numbers just did not add up, and now, shows are closing. Shows  have closed.

Maybe a nomination would have made a difference to a particular shows fate? It is worth thinking about.

The Fairy Princess loved, loved, loved A GENTLEMEN’S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER, and she was thrilled when it won BEST MUSICAL,  but she also would have been thrilled to have seen the fifth spot used.

The choice to not revisit if the fifth spot should be used left Broadway with Casts feeling, oh HOW did Julie Andrews put it?

The Fairy Princess knows that ‘rules are rules’ and they are drafted for a reason, but this year was a very odd year, a very odd year, and she did not want to let it go by without remarking upon it.

It was damn passing strange. (Some people will get that joke)

In short, if Broadway is worth $11.9 Billion Dollars, but the Accountants do not ‘get’ that it is worth it to consider a fifth nomination….well, the idea of that makes The Fairy Princess as jumpy as a puppet on a string – and she knows from puppets.

GYPSY OF THE YEAR Performance - Jodi Eichelberger, Aymee Garcia, Carmen Ruby Floyd & Erin Quill

GYPSY OF THE YEAR – Jodi Eichelberger, Aymee Garcia, Carmen Ruby Floyd & Erin Quill

They may be great at counting, but they seem not to see ‘value’, and in the musical theater, we like things…how shall I say, on an angle?

The Fairy Princess LOVES The Tony Awards – this is not a crack at the Awards themselves, but the process seemed…well anyway, NEXT year…she wants it BIGGER….apologies to Hugh….

The Fairy Princess is pleased to announce that she will be Co-Hosting the charity event, CELEBRITY DOODLES, which is held annually in Palm Springs, and benefits Desert AIDS Project on APRIL 5th, 2014.

Here is the Doodle I did for them 2 years ago –

It raised $600 for Desert AIDS Project! WHAT? YES!

It raised $600 for Desert AIDS Project! WHAT? YES!

The Fairy Princess loves Palm Springs, and she is thrilled to have been asked – she began her love affair with Palm Springs 4 years ago with the SPARKLE Concerts produced by Scott Nevins and Mark Jones, and has made many wonderful friends and had a brilliant time each and every time, so – thank you Doodles for asking, see you in April!

The Fairy Princess has not been blogging that much, because well, everything has been depressing, right?

The last few weeks, in terms of the news, have been truly, truly awful – there’s people being attacked in Russia because of the way they were born…

Ireland decided to take away the right to use the word Homophobia from GLBT people and hand it back to actual Homophobes, because it’s defaming (Say WHAT?)

Science came under attack from people who like to…well, I guess, NOT read things and learn stuff…

and a wonderful Actor is no longer among us….

Philip Seymour Hoffman, RIP

Philip Seymour Hoffman, RIP

What this last one means, honestly, is that there are three young children who are no longer able to get a hug or anything else from their Dad, and this just about kills me – because The Fairy Princess has lost many people to addiction, and whatever your personal thoughts on the addict or the substance, to lose a person to addiction is a horrible, sad thing.

There has also been quite a lot of attention paid to Dylan Farrow, who came forward after years of silence, about abuse she suffered…and that has been an absolute HOTBED of debate on both the mainstream media, social networking, and print journalism fronts – and that, again, is horribly sad.

Because statistics…well…

ChildAbuse-stat-1

Which means, if your little girl or boy has a birthday party, and you invite 20 or so children over, statistically, more than one child in attendance at a party – in your own home, could have been sexually abused.

Which is pretty damn disgraceful, and even as rational voices have tried to be heard, the constant attacks on Ms. Farrow – both Sr. and Jr. -would likely guarantee that if there is a young child out there, being abused,  they are probably going to look at this and remain silent.

And THAT, America – is the wrong message to send – even if you like someone’s movies.

Statute of Limitations has gone by in this case, however the DA at the time,  Frank Maco stated that there was ‘probable cause‘ to move forward with a prosecution, but that his office chose not to. As a Lawyers Daughter myself, that ‘probable cause’ is telling, as is the Judge’s statement -which I have lifted from The Washington Post;     “1993: State Supreme Court Acting Justice Elliott Wilk denounces him as an inadequate, irresponsible and self-absorbed father. The judge says he doesn’t know if the molestation happened, but bars Allen from seeing Dylan for at least six months and limits visits with other children. He also criticizes the Connecticut investigation that found no abuse.”

And this is the last word on some of the facts from Vanity Fair (here)

So NOW we are going to focus on some GOOD things that happened this past week, HAPPY things that have to do with song and dance and all things not Olympian, Russian, Drug Related, blah, blah, blah – because we need it. Well, The Fairy Princess needs it.

1. REX LEE IS IN THE ENTOURAGE MOVIE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Squeeeeeee!

WERK that headset, Rex!

WERK that headset, Rex!

2. The Book, NOTHING LIKE A DAME by Eddie Shapiro is NOW out!

dame

If you love Broadway, or you know someone who does – THIS is what you can get them for Valentine’s Day, Birthday, whatever holiday you claim in December, it is truly so candid and inspiring – and I am so grateful that I have a copy of my very own!

See, there's my copy in the left corner - don't get distracted....

See, there’s my copy in the left corner – don’t get distracted….

3. ALEC MAPA is on SWITCHED AT BIRTH (and yes, I separated those posts so you would not think that he is Rex or Rex is him, because that is truly ridiculous at this point, folks)

And what this means is that ABC Family is now reflecting MY Family, and The Fairy Princess LOVES that!

4. ANTHONY RAPP is back on The Broadway in a new musical called IF/THEN – and here is a clip of the great work we have all been missing – and yeah, that is Tom Kitt at the piano

5.  LILLIAS WHITE is doing a Valentine’s Day concert! Yes, click here for information! I was so happy to see her at the Book Launch of Nothing Like A Dame, and she wants everyone to come to her concert! Norm Lewis does too!

Lillias White & Norm Lewis

Lillias White & Norm Lewis

6. The Webseries SUBMISSIONS ONLY is back for Season 3, featuring people we all know from the Broadway stages – it’s got cameos from big stars and from your Broadway regulars (it could use a bit more racial diversity, honestly, I would be remiss not to point that out) – but to me, as a member of the Broadway community, it’s a great way to get to know the ridiculous side in a way that is obviously absurd, and not just SMASH absurd.

(Cuz SMASH was totally absurd)

7. Canada made a protest video for the Olympics and it features a song by Human League!

Well played, Canada, well played…

8. PAGEANT, the musical has added a show to it’s existing 4, because they were SRO! What a great thing for Broadway Cares/EFA – do not wait to get tickets to the show added on the 24th, because they are going quickly

Oh Marty Thomas, how I love thee

Oh Marty Thomas, how I love thee

9. JUSTIN LIN is directing a new Pilot (this is not so much singing and dancing, but it’s diversity) for CBS called “Scorpion” (and no, it’s not about Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in a speedo – we can’t get THAT lucky). It’s about a Super Brainy Guy that becomes a “real life Professor X”. Anyway, Geeks inherit the Universe and save it at the same time is what I am getting. Congratulations Justin Lin!

10. The David Henry Hwang play, KUNG FU, is in previews at The Signature Theater in NYC – and it looks AMAZING! WOW!

So if you are a Bruce Lee fanatic, or a DHH fanatic, or if you just want to see some Asian Americans on stage acting in what looks to be a great piece – check it out.

There you go – ten things that have helped me make it through the past few weeks, and I hope they help you and give you something to look forward to. Normally, The Fairy Princess is not so rah-rah, but…it has been an AWFUL few weeks, I have just been gobsmacked.

If I had my druthers, I would grab a mug of hot chocolate, fuzzy socks, and go vacation, well….HERE:
